There’s this phone that is manufactured by LG called the enV. It’s a phone that sort of splits in two providing access to the small keyboard used for text messaging. Well, as most people I talk to frequently know, I’m one to have gadget envy. I’m always checking out new gadgets trying to figure out if it would be worth it to by one. There are three types of gadgets I tend to be envious about; computers, phones, and mp3 players. In July of 2006, I broke down and bought an Apple Computer, one of the gadgets I’d been ogling over for some time. Since then I haven’t had any computer envy and don’t expect to for a while. A few months ago I bought my second iPod, the 4gb Nano, of which I plan to have for some time. And recently I renewed my cell phone service with Verizon for 2 years, at the same time getting a new Motorola Razr. This decision is going to eat at me for the next 2 years!
This past week, during MacWorld 2007 in San Francisco, Steve Jobs introduced a new product called the iPhone. The iPhone integrates the iPod, web browsing (via Safari), and phone service into one product. Now, this isn’t necessarily revolutionary as there are many smart phones that can do this. But, after watching the keynote address by Steve Jobs on the internet, it’s clear to me that the iPhone just isn’t another phone and mp3 player. Steve Jobs actually had an iPhone with him during the keynote and used it early and often. Each part of the iPhone is better than anything you will find on the market. Actually, even the iPod functionality by itself is greatly improved, mostly because of the large 3.5″ touchscreen. In other words, say goodbye to the click wheel, everything is now entered via touching the screen. Apple has done what they always do and taken a product years ahead of where other manufacturers are. In the end, there is one catch, Apple has entered into an exclusive contract with Cingular, which mean I’m stuck until November 2008 with my Verizon service. Doesn’t that just suck!
