Yesterday, while reading Newsday online, as I do almost every day, I found out they will start charging a $5/wk. fee to read the newspaper articles and blogs online. This fee is waived for anyone that subscribes to the physical newspaper or Cablevision Optimum Online service, to which I do neither. What do I have to say about this? Buh bye. I understand the newspaper industry is struggling these days, but this is a move that strikes me as odd… or just very Cablevision like, which makes sense since Cablevision now owns Newsday. Didn’t the New York Times try this a year or two ago with bad results? Seriously, if it didn’t work for the NY Times, which is a much more respected paper, it’s not going to work for Newsday. And, how is it a company like Google can make a living giving things away for free, but Cablevision / Newsday can’t? I don’t get it, but I’ll be moving on when the change happens next week.
