Adventures in Flying

Traveling by air sucks! Last weekend I got to go to NY for a long weekend. The main reason for going to NY was to attend my cousins wedding. The weekend as a whole turned out to be a lot of fun, but the return trip from NY turned out to be not so much fun. I arrived at the airport a little after 4 PM on Monday for a 6 PM flight to Minneapolis, where I would spend about an hour layover. We all entered the plane in a reasonable time, got into our seats, and left the terminal at around 6 as scheduled. I had a window seat and was able to see there was a line of planes ahead of us. That didn’t give me the warm fuzzies about taking off soon. After about 20 minutes the pilot said on the PA system we were #10 in line and it would be about another 20 minutes before takeoff. This one lady decides to get up from here seat to go to the bathroom. One of the flight attendants gets on the PA system to tell everyone that we are not allowed to leave our seats while in transit or the plane will have to stop. As the person was exiting the bathroom she didn’t realize that and felt bad. Then, without much though, a second lady got up to go to the bathroom. What was she thinking?! The flight attendant just got finished saying we were not allowed to leave our seats. As she got up you could hear moaning by people on the plane. How idiotic! In the end, the plane didn’t stop, but it just goes to show how clueless some people are. We finally took off after about a 45 minute wait. We also had a 30 minute wait on the runway leaving from Minneapolis to Denver. I finally got home a little after midnight. I checked my work computer to make sure I didn’t have to attend any morning meetings and decided to go into the office late. Either way, the return trip from NY is why I hate traveling by air. Lucky for me there are no trips scheduled for Thanksgiving and Christmas, which are historically the worst times to travel.

As for being in NY, that was fun. On Thursday night, after arriving in the late afternoon, my mom picked me up to take me to the rehearsal dinner. This is when I got to meet my cousin Angela’s future husband, Steve. He seems to be a very good person, which is all you can ask for. Friday was my day of rest and pizza. On Saturday night, after my brother arrived from LA, we met up with a few friends in the city. We met our friend Chrissy, who I originally met 3 or so years ago in LA, at a place called Down the Hatch in the village. She stayed for a couple of hours until leaving to attend a birthday party. My friends Mark, Kathy, Tim, Sue, and Keith arrived at about 10. We proceeded to drink the night away. The wedding was on Sunday, which turned into a full day as we started by going to the reception hall at about noon, where they decided to have pictures taken prior to the wedding. On Monday morning, I went into the city to surprise my friend Mary. She had no idea I was in town as I showed up at her office building. We went out to lunch for some pizza and pasta. Turns out she was also at Down the Hatch on Saturday night when I was there. Somehow we never saw each other, which is surprising because it’s not a big bar.

And that’s when the traveling frustrations started. As always, I had a great time in NY. It’s always sad when I leave or when I don’t get to see all of my friends. It would have been nice to add a few days to the trip to see Bryan and Courtney in DC. But, it wasn’t in the cards. I’m spending this weekend resting and watching my backlogged DVR in recovery from last weekend.

Enjoy the weekend!
