Down the Hatch

In order to meet up with a buddy for a few drinks yesterday, I had to get into the city early or not at all. I decided to head into Queens with my dad and take the subway into the city for the day. It turned out to be a nice relaxing day walking around NY, mostly around the Times Square and Penn Station areas. I spent the latter part of the morning at a Starbucks reading the New York Post, which isn’t my NY newspaper of choice, it’s only as step up from reading the Inquirer, up there with the Daily News. Add the fact that something really bugged me about reading the Post yesterday. I understand a lot of papers do this nowadays and may have done it in the past, but I was probably naive to the concept. The front page of the Post read “Post endorses Obama”. Why is the Post endorsing a person for president? Why do newspapers and TV news channels support one person over another? Isn’t it their responsibility to give their readers and viewers an unbiased opinion. Granted, being totally unbiased is practically impossible, but coming out endorsing one person over another seems outrageous to me. I guess this is a concept I will never understand.

The early afternoon was spent at the Borders store reading a few magazines. Which, if you don’t know, I like to do back home too. I guess some people go to the movies when they have some spare time, I like going to book stores to read magazines. After that I did the touristy thing and went to the ESPN-Zone in Times Square for lunch. I mean, who wouldn’t?!

This is when I started the long trek down to the village to get a few happy hour drinks with Tim. It was about 30 blocks from Penn Station down to the village where we met up at Down the Hatch. This isn’t the first time we met up at this bar. I wrote about meeting my friends there in November 2006. The bar seems to be an easy meeting spot for the both of us since he works down on Wall Street. After a few hours of drinking and catching up, it was time to go. And, on the way home I was greeted with the hiccups, woohoo. That was annoying.

The rest of the day today will be spent packing and making my way into Queens again where I’ll spend the night after what I believe will be a birthday pub crawl for a friend of a friend. This could be dangerous.

K – Sorry we crossed paths this past week and I missed your trip back to LI. Hopefully next time.

Here’s a little ditty from Cali…I was sitting in the hotel ‘restaurant’ with a few colleagues, when a hostess came over and asked us why were in town. We explained and she recommended a club/bar/hangout that she thought we’d like. We asked her what time it usually started hopping and what time we should go. She answered “Well….I’m 22, so I head there around 11…..but you folks might want go go earlier….”

I’m old. Good luck with the job search!

You could have gone with my approach. Started the pub crawl on Friday at about 6:30 and ended at about 2 AM, I think. We managed to hit 5 pubs, drink countless Captain and Cokes, and had 2 car bombs (the shot). It wasn’t pretty and I’m pretty sure I wasn’t walking straight after midnight. This would have been fine with me when all was said and done; but, apparently, the waking up process takes a little longer at my advanced age.

We’ll have to catch up next time I’m in town or if you ever make it out to Denver.
