Fantasy Football 2009 Live Draft Results and Analysis

FFL_Draft_Results_2009Overall, I’m somewhat disappointed with the results from this years draft. Last year I was very high on the draft results, going so far to predict a preseason #1 ranking. The Konmen ended up finishing 2nd during the regular season, 3rd in the playoffs.

I had the first pick in the draft this year, which sounds great, but I’m not a big fan as after the first pick I had to wait until the last pick of the 2nd round to pick again. Then I waited too long to pick one of the top TE’s. During the past few years I’ve found that having one of the top TE’s, Gonzalez or Gates, results in making the playoffs most of the time. Both of those TE’s ended up being taken before I got to pick in the 6th round, Gonzalez going just 5 picks before mine. As a result I ended up taking Keller from the Jets (yeah, I know, I’m a homer) in the 9th round. The TE spot is going to wind up being a drop/add position this year, sort of like the kicker and defense spots. I didn’t even bother picking a 2nd TE during the draft.

Another pitfall from the draft was picking Romo and Barber as a QB/RB combination. Having a QB/RB combination from the same team is usually counterproductive as QB’s tend to throw more TD’s to their WR or TE, where RB’s get their TD’s via the ground. This doesn’t happen all the time, but it does hurt as there are only so many TD’s during a given game and I’m going to miss out on points from one or the other. But there is good news, a day after the draft I was offered a trade for both Dallas players. The trade offer included giving up both Romo and Barber for Warner and Forte. My first instinct was to decline the offer, specifically because Warner has a tendency to get hurt and I think Romo is due for a better year than last. In the end, I decided to accept the offer, considering Forte is one of the top RB’s in the league. There were 7 RB’s picked in the first round of the draft, I now have 2 of them. Nothing to sneeze at there. Being that it’s a 10 team league, QB’s will be available in the event Warner goes down. And I picked up Palmer hoping he has a bounce back season… which isn’t looking likely based on the first few preseason games.

In the end, I still think there’s a playoff team here, just not a preseason #1 ranking. I’m going to go with a preseason #3 ranking. The Konmen have a solid QB in Warner and RB’s in Peterson and Forte. The WR and TE positions are going to cause headaches throughout the season though.

I like the trade! You must have got some serious expertise advice to pull the trigger on that one!

Well, The Konmen are run just like any other organization, with a board of directors. The board includes the GM of the Konmen (me) and the President of the MFL, a fantasy football league run on the East coast. Although the day-to-day decisions (play/sit) are made by the me, big trade offers are brought to the board for review prior to making a final decision. In this case, we decided to accept the trade rather than making a counteroffer.
