Could the Giants have been any worse during last few weeks of the season? I found this LINK to a press conference from the firing of the Giants defensive coordinator. On the other side of Giants stadium land the J. E. T. S. Jets! Jets! Jets! who ended the season on a strong run. Some claim they don’t deserve to be in the playoffs, I say they do, and I don’t care how they got there. No one can say with any certainty the Jets would have lost the game to the Colts during week 16. And, I don’t care who was playing for the Bungals last week, they weren’t going to beet the Jets after that 11+ minute drive in the first quarter. And 5 years from now no one is going to remember how the Jets got into the playoffs, just that they got it. Well, assuming they don’t win the Super Bowl, then people might remember.

Greetings from Louisville, Kentucky. I figured it’s been a week since my trip to NY, might be time for a quick post with details from the trip. Last weekend, from September 26-29, I went to NY / Long Island for a wedding, to hang out with the parents, and see old friends, that includes both long time and age old friends. You know who you are. Most of all, the time in NY was spent getting my fill of rain. It rained pretty much all day Sunday (wedding day) and parts of Saturday and Monday nights.

The wedding was great, although weird to see my little cousin getting married at the ripe old age of 26. Something that never gets old about Greek weddings, pretty much everyone has fun and dances to the classic Greek music, old and young. Very different from other weddings (read: American) where some of the younger kids dance, but most of the older attendees just watch. By the time the night was over I got to catch up with family and friends I haven’t seen in a long time, which was nice. Somehow I’ll have to figure out a way not to let that amount of time go by before seeing them again. That’ll be tough though.

On Saturday I spent some time with Mary. She comments on the blog every so often. We got together at the Kyclades Greek restaurant in Queens, which happens to be one of her favorite places to eat… and she’s Irish! From there she ganged up with my mom to give me lots of grief for not joining her in Greece earlier this month. All in good fun though.

Monday was spent relaxing until later in the day where I met up with Joker and me, both commenters here on the blog and friends from my FDC days. Of all places, Joker picked Buffalo Wile Wings to meet up at, the same bar I caught up with friends out in Denver last month. One thing that struck me from the night is the starting time for Monday night football on the east coast. It took me back to times when MNF meant nothing to me unless the Jets were playing. Living on the west coast now I get to watch the whole game and still have time to do a couple of things before finishing up the night. Sucks to be an east coaster in that respect. Then again, I’ll be in Louisville next Monday when the Jets take on the Dolphins, probably gonna be a long night… for the Dolphins!

Overall, I’m somewhat disappointed with the results from this years draft. Last year I was very high on the draft results, going so far to predict a preseason #1 ranking. The Konmen ended up finishing 2nd during the regular season, 3rd in the playoffs.

Link to Rounds 1-9 Results
Link to Rounds 10-16 Results

I had the first pick in the draft this year, which sounds great, but I’m not a big fan as after the first pick I had to wait until the last pick of the 2nd round to pick again. Then I waited too long to pick one of the top TE’s. During the past few years I’ve found that having one of the top TE’s, Gonzalez or Gates, results in making the playoffs most of the time. Both of those TE’s ended up being taken before I got to pick in the 6th round, Gonzalez going just 5 picks before mine. As a result I ended up taking Keller from the Jets (yeah, I know, I’m a homer) in the 9th round. The TE spot is going to wind up being a drop/add position this year, sort of like the kicker and defense spots. I didn’t even bother picking a 2nd TE during the draft.

Another pitfall from the draft was picking Romo and Barber as a QB/RB combination. Having a QB/RB combination from the same team is usually counterproductive as QB’s tend to throw more TD’s to their WR or TE, where RB’s get their TD’s via the ground. This doesn’t happen all the time, but it does hurt as there are only so many TD’s during a given game and I’m going to miss out on points from one or the other. But there is good news, a day after the draft I was offered a trade for both Dallas players. The trade offer included giving up both Romo and Barber for Warner and Forte. My first instinct was to decline the offer, specifically because Warner has a tendency to get hurt and I think Romo is due for a better year than last. In the end, I decided to accept the offer, considering Forte is one of the top RB’s in the league. There were 7 RB’s picked in the first round of the draft, I now have 2 of them. Nothing to sneeze at there. Being that it’s a 10 team league, QB’s will be available in the event Warner goes down. And I picked up Palmer hoping he has a bounce back season… which isn’t looking likely based on the first few preseason games.

In the end, I still think there’s a playoff team here, just not a preseason #1 ranking. I’m going to go with a preseason #3 ranking. The Konmen have a solid QB in Warner and RB’s in Peterson and Forte. The WR and TE positions are going to cause headaches throughout the season though.
