WordPress 3.0 “Thelonious”

WordPress 3.0 “Thelonious” was released earlier today and I wanted to give a little kudos to the WordPress team.

Major new features in this release include a sexy new default theme called Twenty Ten. Theme developers have new APIs that allow them to easily implement custom backgrounds, headers, shortlinks, menus (no more file editing), post types, and taxonomies.

And for the first time in years a new theme has been added to the release to replace the Default theme, this one named Twenty Ten. I’m hoping to be able to spend some time with the new theme, but until then you’re stuck with the one I’ve been using for the past half a year, P2. Although I like the new theme, I’d like to figure out how to customize the look of posts based on the post category. For example, when I post using the “status” category in P2, the post title is left out, giving the post more of a Facebook status or Twitter look to it, which I like.

I’m a genius! Well, not really. But if you go to the photo albums using the P2 theme, the albums and pictures are no longer at the bottom of the page. Thanks to the WordPress community for having such a great forum to find the answer I needed. Turns out I just needed to remove a couple of “clear:both” statements in the NextGen CSS files. Sweet!

Turns out there’s one glitch with the new theme that can’t be fixed by me… it’s not Internet Explorer 6 friendly. In other words, if you’re using IE6, you’re out of luck. Haha, just kidding, sort of. To work around the glitch I’ve added a theme switcher to the right. Most of the other available themes are IE6 friendly. If you were a fan of the previous theme, it was called SeaShore and is available. Just take into consideration that the theme switcher doesn’t bring with it all the adjustments that have to be made for each theme, so you might notice odd things, like the header picture being too small or big. Thanks Joker for the heads up.

Testing out a new theme here on the blog. It’s called P2, a microblogging theme (think Twitter), and developed by the same group as WordPress. There are a few bugs I’m dealing with, like the fact that the photo albums don’t show at the top of the page. Since I’ll have some time off during the next few weeks I’ll play around with it. If you have any ideas, feel free to add them here.
